AN OVERVIEW

Expenditure on education and training – measured in relation to Gross domestic product – constitutes one of the key indicators to evaluate policies implemented for the growth and optimization of human capital. The indicator makes it possible to quantify, at the domestic and international level, how much countries spend in order to improve facilities and encourage teachers and students to participate in training courses. In Italy expenditure on education and training was 4.2 percent of Gross domestic product (2012)

Definitions used

The indicator, expressed in percentage terms, is given by the ratio of overall public expenditure on education and training (transfers to households and to public and private institutions are, therefore, included) to Gross domestic product (Gdp). Expenditure and Gdp are considered in current euros. For the purpose of regional comparisons it is possible to consider only Government final consumption expenditure, which in any case accounts for over 80 percent of overall expenditure. All data presented in this factsheet are based on the Esa 95; in particular, regional data refer to the series of regional economic accounts published in November 2013.  At present, data is being revised to meet the requirements of Esa 2010. The update of the series according to Esa 2010 will be made available on ISTAT website during 2015.
